Lesson overview:

In this lesson, students explore how to communicate professionally and confidently on their first day at work. They listen to advice for new employees, work with useful workplace phrases, practise short conversations with colleagues, and build a clear self-introduction for a team meeting.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • introduce themselves naturally in a new workplace,
  • ask polite questions and keep a conversation going,
  • use active listening phrases in professional small talk,
  • give a short structured self-introduction to a team.

Lead-in:

Start by asking students to remember their first day at a current or previous job and describe how they felt. Then have them imagine a friend starting a new job tomorrow and share their top tips for the first day, first week, and first month. This makes the topic personal right away and leads naturally into the lesson focus.
