Lesson overview:

Pre-class

Students can optionally watch a short video before class to introduce the topic and give them some background for the discussion.

This speaking club explores drinking culture, social expectations, and the growing interest in reducing alcohol without necessarily giving it up completely. Students work with nuanced vocabulary, compare different attitudes to drinking, read a personal blog post, and discuss social pressure, habits, and balance. They finish by designing and pitching an alcohol-free social venue.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • discuss attitudes towards drinking and alcohol-free lifestyles;
  • use natural vocabulary for social drinking, moderation, and peer pressure;
  • express and justify opinions on changing social habits.

Lead-in:

Students begin by deciding which statements about drinking culture are true where they live. They discuss social events, attitudes towards refusing alcohol, public drunkenness, holiday drinking, and the way alcohol is represented in films and social media.
