Lesson overview:

This pronunciation lesson helps students hear and produce the three common -ed endings: /t/, /d/ and /ɪd/. Using a dinner-party story, listening tasks, pair work, and a competitive storytelling game, students notice pronunciation patterns and practise regular past-tense verbs in connected speech.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • distinguish between the /t/, /d/ and /ɪd/ pronunciations of -ed;
  • pronounce regular past-tense verbs more accurately;
  • use correctly pronounced -ed verbs while telling short stories.

Lead-in:

Students start by talking about cooking for friends, what they prepared, whether the meal went well, and what can go wrong when hosting dinner. This creates a natural past-tense context before students focus more closely on how regular past verbs are pronounced.
