Type of English: business

Lesson overview:

In this lesson, students explore how to make small talk in everyday social and work situations. They read practical tips, work with useful conversation starters, and practise short dialogues in pairs and groups.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • start conversations more naturally
  • keep small talk going with follow-up questions
  • end conversations politely

Lead-in:

Start by asking students where people usually need to talk to someone they do not know well, such as at a party, on a plane, or at work. Then have them discuss their own experiences of starting conversations and what makes small talk easy or difficult.
