Lesson overview:

This lesson completes the three-part renting series by focusing on what happens when something goes wrong after moving in. Students learn vocabulary for common household problems, compare effective and ineffective messages to landlords, and practise polite requests. They also use the present perfect continuous to explain how long a problem has been happening before writing their own realistic maintenance message.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • describe common problems in a rented home;
  • explain how long an ongoing problem has lasted;
  • write a clear, polite message asking a landlord to take action.

Lead-in:

Students discuss problems they have experienced while renting and look at photos of issues such as leaks, mould, and noise. They identify what is wrong and decide who they would normally contact first: the landlord, agency, or a neighbour.
