Type of English: general

Lesson overview:

In this pronunciation-focused lesson, students practise tricky English vowel sounds through minimal pairs, listening tasks, short poems, and partner games. They work with sound contrasts such as /ɪ/ vs /iː/, /e/ vs /æ/, /ʌ/ vs /ɒ/, and /ʊ/ vs /uː/, using words like ship/sheep, pen/pan, cup/cop, and pull/pool.

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to

  • better hear the difference between similar vowel sounds,
  • pronounce common minimal pairs more clearly.

Lead-in:

Start by saying short sound pairs such as fish/tree, egg/cat, up/dog, and bull/shoe. Ask students to listen carefully and decide whether the sounds are the same or different. This quick ear-training activity helps students notice the target vowel contrasts before they move into poems and pair work.
