Autumn idioms are a strange set to teach. They are built out of leaves, nuts, harvest and bad weather, and almost none of them are about autumn. Only the autumn years refers to the season at all. The other eleven borrow the imagery and mean something completely different, which is what makes them worth teaching in October and still useful in March. Students match idioms to their meanings, rebuild each one from its verb, choose between near-miss words, then produce the idiom from a described situation and use it in dialogue.
