Lesson overview:
This Halloween ESL lesson turns one of the best Halloween debate topics into a full class: should Halloween be canceled? Students listen to a news report where people argue for and against celebrating it, then hold a debate of their own.
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- agree or disagree with statements about Halloween
- follow a news report with several opinions
- give opinions with phrases like I can't wrap my head around and It's beyond me
- write a comment and defend their view in a class debate
It works especially well with groups that don't celebrate Halloween, because disagreeing is the point.
Lead-in:
Students chat about Halloween decorations and say whether they enjoy the holiday or could do without it. Then they read positive and negative statements about Halloween and say which ones they agree with.
