Lesson overview:
In this practical lesson, students learn how to talk about purchasing a second-hand vehicle, from checking documents to negotiating the price. They work with useful vocabulary such as service history, mileage, proof of ownership, and asking price, then practise spotting red flags in an advert and role-playing a buyer-seller conversation.
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- ask questions about a vehicle’s history and condition;
- use present perfect questions like Has it ever broken down?;
- identify potential problems in ads and documents;
- negotiate a price politely and confidently.
Lead-in:
Start with the photos of a car sale and ask students what they think is happening. Then have them discuss whether they would buy from a private seller or a dealer, what they would check first, and whether they have ever regretted buying something second-hand.
