What is inside the reading comprehension library

Every text here is a real published piece. They are authentic articles from the BBC, Forbes, The Atlantic and the New Yorker, cut for length rather than rewritten into textbook English, so the sentences a student meets are the sentences a journalist wrote. That holds at A1-A2 as much as at B2-C1. A student who only reads graded prose gets a shock the first time they open a real article, and a lesson is a better place for that than a job.

Each lesson in the section gives you the following:

An authentic article, cut to a length a class can get through in about ten minutes
Comprehension questions with an answer key, from general understanding to specific detail
Vocabulary in context work on the words the text actually uses, rather than a separate list
Pre-reading and post-reading tasks, so the text arrives with a reason and leaves with a conversation
Teacher notes on where students usually stall and which words are worth pre-teaching
A printable version, so the same lesson works on paper and on a shared screen

Topics run through culture, lifestyle, relationships, psychology and the 21st century dilemmas category. Adults read about these willingly, which matters when you need a text to hold a room for ten minutes.

Reading texts by level from A1 to C1

Text length is not what separates the bands here. Every lesson is cut so that ten minutes of reading is enough, whether the article is short and dense or longer and easier to skim, so a B2-C1 text is not automatically the long one. A graded reading text in this section means one matched to the language a student can handle, not one trimmed to a word count. What changes with the band is the article's language and the kind of question you can fairly ask about it.

A1-A2	An authentic article on a concrete subject, with the support built into the tasks rather than the text. Matching a paragraph to a heading, true or false on stated facts, finding one number or name.
A2-B1	Skimming for the main idea, scanning for specific information, short written answers, and the first vocabulary in context items.
B1-B2	Multiple choice on meaning, questions that need inference, matching words to definitions from context, and a discussion after the text.
B2-C1	Tone and attitude questions, separating fact from the writer's opinion, idiom and register work, and argument analysis.

For ESL reading comprehension for beginners, keep to the A1-A2 band and lean on the tasks rather than looking for an easier text, because the article itself is authentic at every band. Beginners cannot infer in a second language yet, and a question that asks how the writer feels will get a blank look. Reading comprehension for ESL intermediate students is where inference starts to be fair. It is also where you stop pre-teaching every unknown word, because working a word out from context is now the skill the lesson is teaching.

Task types in every reading lesson

The questions you attach to a text decide what the lesson teaches. Ten comprehension questions that all ask for a stated fact train nothing except patience. The ESL reading comprehension exercises in this section move through several kinds of question on purpose, from the fastest to the slowest.

General understanding. One or two questions on the whole text, answered after a first quick read, so the student gets the shape before the detail.
Specific information. Scanning questions with an answer that exists in one line, which is how people read in real life when they want a fact.
True or false questions. Fast to check and useful for spotting the student who is answering from the question rather than from the text.
Multiple choice on meaning. Where the wrong options are plausible, so the student has to rule them out rather than recognise the right one.
Vocabulary in context. Work the meaning out from the sentence around it, then check. Reading feeds the vocabulary lessons here rather than replacing them.
Discussion after the text. The questions the article raises rather than the ones it answers, which is where the reading turns into speaking.

The order matters as much as the mix. Ask the general question first and the specific ones afterwards. A student who starts on detail never builds a picture of the whole text and ends up answering everything from single sentences. Each lesson comes with the answer key, so the checking stage is a conversation about two disputed items rather than you reading out a list.

How to run a reading lesson in three stages

The teacher hands out the text, the room goes quiet for fifteen minutes, everyone answers the questions, and the class ends with nobody having said a word. That is the default reading lesson, and it spends most of the hour on the least useful part of the task. Three stages fix it, and the reading itself is the shortest of them.

Before reading, about ten minutes. Ask two questions about the subject so students bring what they already know, then pre-teach only the words that would block comprehension entirely. Do not pre-teach every unknown word, because you are removing the work the text was chosen to do. Finish by giving a reason to read, one question they will be able to answer after the first pass, which turns reading into a task instead of a duty.
While reading, no more than ten minutes. Two passes, not one. Give two or three minutes for a first read for the main idea only, with the questions face down, and take the answer to your one global question. Then five to seven minutes for a closer read with the comprehension questions in front of them. Students who read once and answer are guessing, and students who read for fifteen minutes have started translating.
After reading, the rest of the hour. Check the answers, but stop on the two items that split the room rather than reading out all eight. Then vocabulary in context, and then the discussion. This last stage is why the text was chosen, and it is the first thing teachers cut when the lesson runs late. Cut a comprehension question instead.

The ratio is what makes it work. Ten minutes of reading inside a sixty-minute lesson feels wrong the first time you do it and produces roughly three times as much talking.

ESL reading comprehension worksheets in PDF

Every lesson downloads as a PDF, with the text, the questions and the answer key. These ESL reading comprehension worksheets are laid out so the text and the questions can be separated. That matters more than it looks. A student who can see both at once will read the questions and hunt for the answers, and will never read the article.

Print the text on its own for the first pass and hand out the questions afterwards, or fold the page. In an online lesson, show the text on screen share and keep the questions to yourself until the second pass. The same PDF also works as homework, either as preparation before a speaking lesson or as follow-up after one. If you want the practice without the full lesson, the worksheets section has shorter handouts that do one thing each.

If you search for ESL reading comprehension pdf, you usually want one specific thing, a file that opens the same way on every machine and prints without the layout shifting. That is what these are, and it is also why the answer key sits on its own page rather than at the foot of the student sheet.

Reading lessons for online and one-to-one classes

Silent reading in a room is uncomfortable online and pointless one to one. Sitting on a video call watching someone read for eight minutes is dead air, and both of you know it.

Two adjustments deal with it. Send the text as homework before the lesson and keep your whole class time for the questions, the vocabulary and the discussion. Or split the text, read alternate paragraphs, and have each person report what their half said. The second version turns reading into a speaking task and works well with two or three students.

Whichever you use, say out loud how long the reading will take before it starts. Students who do not know when a silent task ends read more slowly than they need to, and in a group of three that costs you the discussion at the end.

One to one, read the first paragraph aloud yourself. It sets the pace, it models the pronunciation of the difficult words, and it means the student is not performing while they are still working out what the article is about.

How to match a text to a student level

Count the unknown words in one paragraph. If a student meets more than about five they cannot place, the text is above their level for comprehension work, however interesting it is. They can still read it with support, but they will not answer inference questions about it, because all their attention is going on vocabulary.

Three signs you have picked a text that is too hard. The student reads aloud slowly and evenly, which usually means they are decoding rather than reading. They answer using words lifted straight from the question. Or they go quiet and ask what a whole sentence means, not a word.

When the point of the lesson is the discussion, take the band below and spend the extra time talking. When the point is the reading skill itself, staying at the band is right, but shorten the text. If you are not sure where a new student sits, the placement test gives you a CEFR band in about fifteen minutes and includes reading items.

Get access to the reading lesson library

The reading lessons come with the same teacher subscription as everything else, so you are not buying a section. Standard opens the library at 72 dollars a year. Plus, at 120, adds homework you can set on a text before the lesson. Pro, at 144, adds interactive homework, games and a Miro board per lesson. Pay monthly if you prefer, and ask about team access if your school needs several seats.

Every reading lesson is in every plan, so the only real choice is homework. If you regularly send a text out before class, that is the feature worth paying for.

Frequently asked questions

Do the reading lessons come with an answer key?

Yes. Every lesson includes the answers to the comprehension and vocabulary questions, along with teacher notes on the items students usually get wrong. You can print the student pages separately from the key.

How long are the texts?

Length varies by article rather than by level, because these are real published pieces and they do not arrive in tidy sizes. What is consistent is the reading time. Every text is cut so that ten minutes is enough, which is two to three minutes for the gist and five to seven for a closer read.

Do these lessons work for one-to-one classes?

Yes. Send the text ahead as preparation, or read alternate paragraphs and report back to each other. Both keep the lesson time for questions and discussion instead of silent reading, which is the part that does not work with one student.

Can I set a reading text as homework?

You can, and there is a trade-off either way. Sending the text ahead frees the lesson for questions and discussion, but you lose the chance to watch how a student reads, and some of the group will arrive having skimmed it or not opened it at all. The safer split is to send the article and keep every task for the lesson.

How often are new reading lessons added?

Six to eight new lesson plans are published across the library every month, and reading lessons are a regular part of that. New material appears at the top of the catalogue, so you can check what has arrived without using the filters.
