Lesson overview:
This B2–C1 lesson explores the cultural conversation around GLP-1 medications, celebrity culture, advertising, and changing beauty standards. Students read factual background and an opinion piece, analyse contrasting viewpoints, and learn advanced language for expressing different degrees of certainty. They then practise making opinions more nuanced before taking part in timed discussions.
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- discuss controversial cultural trends from different perspectives;
- express certainty, uncertainty, and speculation more precisely;
- soften strong opinions and build more nuanced arguments.
Lead-in:
Students begin by deciding how certain they are about six statements related to Ozempic and GLP-1 medications. Before comparing answers, they explore a scale of expressions ranging from “I’m pretty positive that…” to “I’ve genuinely no idea,” immediately setting up the lesson’s focus on certainty and speculation.
