Table of Contents

Conditionals are easier to remember when they come with a tune. Pop songs are full of if-lines: promises, wishes, regrets and imaginary lives. This list gives you eleven songs, sorted by conditional type, so you can pick the right one for the structure you are teaching.

For each song you get the conditional it practises, the level it suits and two or three classroom tasks. Play the official video, let students listen for the pattern, then move them into speaking or writing.

Zero conditional songs

The zero conditional describes things that are always true: if/when + present simple, present simple. Songs use it for rules of life, which makes them easy to discuss.

Ironic

Alanis Morissette, 1995 · Watch the official video

Why this song

The song is a list of everyday bad luck, and one line turns it into a general rule about how life behaves, built with when and the present simple in both halves. Some course books file the song under the first conditional, which makes it a good way to discuss the difference.

Activity ideas
  • Murphy's Law: students write their own rules of bad luck. When you're late, the bus is always early.
  • Ironic or just unlucky? Discuss whether each situation in the song is really ironic.
  • Feel the difference: rewrite one rule as a first conditional about tomorrow. If I'm late tomorrow, the bus will be early.

If You Love Somebody Set Them Free

Sting, 1985 · Watch the official video

Why this song

The title is the pattern: if + present simple followed by an instruction that is true every time. It is the clearest way to show that the result of a zero conditional can be an imperative.

Activity ideas
  • Life advice: students write their own rules in the same shape. If you want to sleep well, turn off your phone.
  • Agree or disagree: is the title good advice? Students defend their answer with one more zero conditional.

More zero conditional practice

The Amazing Nature worksheet uses the same pattern for surprising facts about plants and animals, from octopuses to chameleons.

First conditional songs

The first conditional is for a real possibility in the future: if + present simple, will + verb. Use when instead of if when the speaker is sure it will happen.

Count on Me

Bruno Mars, 2010 · Watch the official video

Why this song

The whole song is a list of promises to a friend, and almost every promise is a first conditional. It also mixes if and when, so students hear both.

Activity ideas
  • Promise chain: each student adds one promise. If you ever lose your keys, I'll let you in.
  • If or when? Students sort the promises they hear: which situations might happen, and which will?
  • Check the verbs: underline the verb after if or when. It is never will.

Fix You

Coldplay, 2005 · Watch the official video

Why this song

The verses are built on when-clauses, and the chorus answers with will. It is a calm, slow song, so lower levels can follow the structure easily.

Activity ideas
  • Support messages: students write a short text to a friend who is having a bad week. When you get home, I'll call you.
  • Spot the when: students note each when-clause and decide whether the event is certain.

I'm Your Man

Leonard Cohen, 1988 · Watch the official video

Why this song

Every verse is an offer: if you want one thing, I'll be it. The pattern is simple, but the poetic lyrics suit advanced groups who can discuss what each promise really means.

Activity ideas
  • Conditional offers: students write offers to a new colleague. If you need help with the report, I'll stay late.
  • First or second? Rewrite three offers as second conditionals and discuss how the meaning changes: If you wanted…, I would…

The Sweet Escape

Gwen Stefani, 2006 · Watch the official video

Why this song

The lyrics mix real and imaginary situations, which makes the song perfect for comparing first and second conditionals in one lesson.

Activity ideas
  • Real or imaginary? Students describe a real travel plan with the first conditional and a dream trip with the second.
  • Escape plan: If I could take six months off, I would…

Second conditional songs

The second conditional imagines a different present: if + past simple, would + verb. It is the most common conditional in pop music, because songs love imaginary lives.

If I Were a Boy

Beyoncé, 2008 · Watch the official video

Why this song

One of the best-known second conditionals in pop. The title also shows were for every person, and the song opens a discussion about gender roles.

Activity ideas
  • Swap places: students write what they would do for a day as another person: a boss, a celebrity, a neighbor. If I were my boss, I would…
  • Role cards: give each student a profession and ask them to finish: If I were a lawyer, I would…

Why this song

The song imagines a world run differently, which makes it ideal for talking about leadership and decision-making.

Activity ideas
  • Leadership plan: If you were the CEO of a global company, what would you change first?
  • Chain story: one student starts with If I were in charge…, and the next builds on it.

If You Were a Sailboat

Katie Melua, 2007 · Watch the official video

Why this song

Every verse is an imaginary comparison, so students hear the if + past simple, would + verb pattern again and again.

Activity ideas
  • What if? Students write their own if I were… metaphors about themselves.
  • Extra verse: students write one more verse using their own second conditionals.

Third conditional songs

The third conditional imagines a different past: if + past perfect, would have + past participle. It is the language of regret, so it fits story songs.

If It Hadn't Been for Love

The SteelDrivers, also recorded by Adele, 2008 / 2011 · Watch the official video

Why this song

The singer tells his whole story through third conditionals, one regret at a time. Few songs give students this many examples of the pattern. Content note: it is a murder ballad, and the singer ends up in prison, so check your group first.

Activity ideas
  • Backwards story: retell the story from the end with If he hadn't…, he wouldn't have…
  • Lucky accidents: students write about a good thing that happened by chance. If I hadn't missed that train, I wouldn't have met my best friend.

Mixed conditional songs

Mixed conditionals connect two times: a past cause with a present result, or a present situation with a past result. They are the natural next step once students can tell the other types apart.

White Flag

Dido, 2003 · Watch the official video

Why this song

The singer still loves her former partner after the relationship has ended, and one line joins a present situation to a past result. It is also a good contrast to first conditional lines elsewhere in the song.

Activity ideas
  • Then and now: students link one past choice to their life today. If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.
  • Discuss: is it better to say how you feel, even when it is over?

Homework: conditionals in the wild

Ask students to collect real conditionals for a week, from songs, series, conversations or the news. In the next lesson they share them and decide which type each one is. It turns the grammar into something they notice outside the classroom.
