29 Valentine's Day ESL Lessons for Adults, A1 to C1 (Free Options at Every Level)

Table of Contents

February 14 falls on a Sunday in 2027, so your Valentine's Day lessons happen in the week of February 8 to 12, or in the week after. This page collects every Valentine's Day and love lesson on ESL LAB, 29 in all, sorted by level from A1 to C1.

You can teach Valentine's Day at every level without paying for anything. Each level has a free option: two complete Valentine's lesson plans, a free party lesson and a free grammar worksheet that goes with a love-story lesson. They are first on this page. Most lessons take 60 minutes and come with a Quizlet set, and many have a Miro board for online classes.

Free Valentine's lessons for every level

Each of these is a complete lesson you can open and teach today, with no plan needed. Where a lesson has a Quizlet set or a Miro board, those are free too.

A1-A2: Valentine's Day Ideas is the safest first Valentine's lesson for adults. It is about ways to celebrate, not about who is dating whom, so it works even when romance is not your students' cup of tea.

A2-B1: Party Hard is not a Valentine's lesson, but it is the one to use when your class turns the last lesson before the 14th into a party. Students learn the present perfect through Never Have I Ever, which works just as well at a Galentine's brunch.

B1-B2: the free Past Simple vs Present Perfect worksheet gives ten exercises on the grammar that Love Is in the Air teaches through three love stories. Use it as homework after the lesson, or on its own if you don't have a plan yet.

B2-C1: Are Soulmates Real? is one of the most-read lessons on this page. Advanced students argue with a science article and finish by writing their opinion as an answer on Quora.

Beginner (A1-A2)

Short videos and texts, clear models and a lot of support. The free pick here is Valentine's Day Ideas; these four come with a plan.

Beginner · Pro lessons and worksheets

Getting CloserA1A2ProWatch an interview about the nicest things people have done for them and talk about surprises for friendsSee the lesson →Best GiftsA1A2ProRead four short gift stories and talk about giving and getting presents, with object pronounsSee the lesson →Valentine's Day Essential VocabularyA1A2ProWorksheetLearn the core words (date, couple, roses) and use them in three short dialoguesSee the worksheet →Speed DatingA1A2ProListen to a speed-dating conversation, then run their own round with questions with be and doSee the lesson →

Getting Closer works for any group of adults: the kind things in it are for friends and family as much as partners. Speed Dating is the one to choose for a new group, because the speed-dating round is really a getting-to-know-you activity.

Pre-intermediate (A2-B1)

Dating, songs and TV with a clear language goal. The free pick here is Party Hard for a class party.

Red vs. Green Flags is the most-read lesson on this page, and it runs as well online as in class. Galentine's Day is a speaking club: no reading, no grammar, an hour of talk, so it fits a conversation group on Friday February 12, the day before Galentine's Day.

Intermediate (B1-B2)

The biggest choice: podcasts, film, idioms and grammar through love stories. The free pick here is the Past Simple vs Present Perfect worksheet.

Advanced (B2-C1)

Articles, debates and real stories for students who want more than vocabulary. The free pick here is Are Soulmates Real?.

Worst Dates Ever and The Tinder Swindler lean on storytelling and debate, so they are the ones to pick when your advanced students just want to talk.

Not everyone in your class is in a couple

Adult groups mix married students, single students and students who think Valentine's Day is a marketing trick. These lessons work for all of them, because the topic is friends, gifts, film or science, not their own love life.
